Friday's cool gizmo

This is pretty cool. Visa is working on a credit card that can show information about your account on a little LCD screen similar to the size and placement of the magnetic strip on the back.
Since a credit card would be able to display confidential account info, they are also working on having it biometrics-enabled. A working prototype may be out in a year, and the real deal a few years after that.

In the Navy

In an attempt to standardize their phsyical access among all DoD locations, The Defense Department wrapped up a year long pilot in November to test the possibility of using biometrics for their new Common Access Card program.
The pilot went well, and they have begun to integrate readers and cards into their system. By 2010 they expect to have biometric data in all their smart card chips.
Navy tests provide clues for DoD-wide use of biometrics on smart cards.

VIA Mouse a hot gadget

We got a mention in Digital Journal about VIA Mouse. Although $133 is a little higher than its MSRP (not sure where they got that from!), we much appreciate it. :)

...And they're off!

So the UK has begun a pilot, to see just how popular identity cards can be.
Part of this pilot will include the study to see just what biometric technology may win everyone over - fingerprint, iris or facial.
Considering that most people replied to a survey that they welcome an identity card, the UK expects that 2007-2008 will begin passports with biometric data, and by 2014 an identity card will be compulsory. The 10,000 volunteers will begin testing this week, and although they didn't say how long it will last, we'll keep our eye out for the progress being made.

Let's make some progress.

Here is a good opinion column proposing ways to dilute privacy concerns. Most articles and news stories are good at pointing out the obvious, and alerting people to problems and concerns (hmm, sounds like whining!).
So you can get people wound up. Weeee.
But here's someone who is making steps to creating a solution to keep customers happy and well-informed. Instead of just complaining.
I think at this point we all know there are privacy issues when it comes to customer authentication. So here are some ideas to put those to rest. Or at least give them a nap.
